RESERVE UNIT

The Mound Police Department has a well-deserved reputation for having one of the most progressive and professionally-managed Reserve programs in the state. The Mound Police Reserve Unit is staffed by thoroughly screened, well-trained and certified adult volunteers. These individuals serve the community by supplementing the services provided by the department's full-time, licensed staff.

Typically, reserve officers are those who are beginning a career in law enforcement. They contribute one or more years of service while enrolled in a state-accredited college-level law enforcement degree program. Many continue their service after earning their degree, while they look for their first licensed position. This gives them an opportunity to develop invaluable "real world' experience to augment their classroom learning, before they become licensed peace officers. In return, they donate hundreds of hours annually to support the reserves unit's mission. Past members of our team now serve as licensed local, county, state and federal officers in Minnesota and across the country.

Our unit is also staffed by individuals who donate their valuable time simply to make a meaningful contribution to our community. These reserve officers come from all walks of life, bringing valuable life experience and diversity to our team. All applicants to the Reserve Unit must successfully complete a thorough background investigation and interview process before being accepted into the unit. All reserve officers meet specific training and certification requirements, in compliance with departmental, state and federal regulations.

At full strength, our Reserve Unit has a staff of twelve reserve officers, and is supervised by a licensed police officer, a reserve lieutenant and two reserve sergeants. Reserve officers are "on call" at all times. This enables them to be called out on a moment's notice to respond to any type of emergency, such as tornados, flooding, search-and-rescue or, more recently, the I-35W bridge collapse. More often, they are called out to assist with prisoner transports, provide traffic control at accident or fire scenes, or provide security at scheduled regional events. At any given time, our reserve officers may be seen working routine patrol shifts, just like licensed officers. As certified First Responders, they also respond to medical calls, and are assigned to any event where large numbers of people are expected. This step ensures that primary emergency medical aid is already "on scene," saving critical minutes when it counts most.

In 2005, the Unit's members donated more than 3,500 hours of service to the City of Mound and neighboring communities. The Unit was honored for their service in 2006 with The President's Volunteer Service Award, signed by President George W. Bush, as well as a Congressional Certificate of Special Recognition, sponsored by U.S. Congressional Representative Jim Ramstad. Congressman Ramstad personally presented both awards on December 12, stating,”These volunteer officers, along with their licensed counterparts, willingly walk into harms way each time they put on their uniform and badge. They knowingly accept great risk in order to keep our cities and our nation safe. I proudly stand here tonight, on behalf of the President of the United States, to recognize their sacrifice and thank them for their service.”
