K9 UNIT

CANINE UNIT
The Mound Police Canine Unit serves the citizens of Mound and the surrounding communities. The Mound Police Department has one officer and one canine that are assigned to this unit.

The Canine Unit responds to regular calls for service, but is also available for specialized calls such as:

-          Crimes in progress
-          Burglary calls
-          Building searches or open area searches
-          High risk traffic stops
-          Tracking and apprehension of fleeing suspects
-          Vehicle and narcotic searches

TRAINING
The Canine Unit goes through continuous training to maintain their specialized skills. The Mound Police Canine Unit is cross trained in Criminal Apprehension and Narcotic Detection.

The Canine Unit qualifies each year through a three day trial event to earn a Police Dog 1 (PD1) Certificate from the United States Police Canine Association (USPCA).  A PD1 trial consists of agility, obedience, article searches, suspect searches, suspect apprehension, and suspect apprehension with gun fire.

The Canine Unit earns a certificate each year from the USPCA in Narcotic Detection by locating narcotics hidden in vehicles and indoor room searches.

CANINE BIO
Canine “Reagan” was purchased and imported from Europe in February of 2005.  Reagan arrived in the States at 19 months old. Reagan is a male German Shepherd Dog.

Reagan and his handler, Officer Schoenherr, attended the St. Paul Police Canine Academy in March of 2005 and graduated in May of 2005.
